🧠 Eurovision of Eccentricity
The Ig Nobels find new love in Switzerland’s Alps.
The Ig Nobel prizes exist to reward research that « first makes you laugh, then makes you think. » We’re talking about a 2003 award for documenting homosexual necrophilia in mallard ducks. A 2022 prize for proving that when two people are attracted to each other, their heartbeats synchronize. Last year: whether painting zebra stripes on cows reduces mosquito bites (it does, apparently). This is not high-stakes science. Nobody is winning defense contracts here. And yet, last year, nearly half of the laureates refused to attend the ceremony in Boston. Too uncomfortable, they said. The travel restrictions. The atmosphere. The whole vibe of the place.
Let that sink in. The United States, which built its scientific dominance on being the one place in the world where every weird researcher from every random country could show up and do their thing, has become too hostile to host an award show that gives out trophies made of whatever was lying around the lab. Harvard. MIT. Boston. Thirty-five years of this tradition. Gone, at least for now, because the political climate made foreign scientists feel unwelcome. I’m not going to editorialize excessively here (I will a little), but: this is insane. You don’t accidentally lose the Ig Nobels. You have to really work at it.
So where did they end up? Zurich. September 3rd. The University of Zurich, ETH, EPFL, all apparently falling over themselves to make it happen. The organizers noted, somewhat cheerfully, that Zurich « moved mountains » to accommodate the ceremony (then immediately clarified, in a parenthetical that I genuinely love, that moving mountains is actually illegal in Switzerland). Which, okay, that’s a bit on the nose for a country that manages to be both the punchline and the straight man of its own joke. But here’s the thing: Switzerland didn’t engineer a grand cultural offensive to attract the Ig Nobels. It just… picked up the phone. The Americans made it impossible, the Europeans made it possible, and the path of least resistance runs through Zurich. That’s basically Switzerland’s whole foreign policy, and it works remarkably well.
There’s a tendency to over-romanticize this stuff, and I’ll try to resist it. Switzerland hosting a science comedy awards ceremony is not a geopolitical statement. The cuckoo clock reference in the official press release is doing a lot of heavy lifting. But there is something real underneath the silliness: Switzerland’s institutional stability, its genuine openness to international researchers, its refusal to make scientific exchange into a culture war front, these are not small things right now. They’re actually competitive advantages. The Ig Nobels will rotate biennially between Zurich and other European cities going forward, the organizer compared it to Eurovision, which is either inspired or alarming depending on your feelings about Eurovision. Either way: America had this for 35 years and threw it away. Switzerland answered the email.
Have a great week!
